Set on a large valley among rocky hills at the confluence of dried river valleys below Mount of Saint Matthew, the site of the first prehistoric settlement, Scicli is a Baroque town with magnificent churches and palaces. Rebuilt following the 1693 earthquake and thanks to its elegant palazzi and churches, it is another Sicilian 'Baroque Jewel' together with Ragusa and Noto.
In the central Piazza Italia, facing Palazzo Fava rises the church of the Madonna delle Milizie or of Sant’Ignazio. It owns its name from a painting and a statue made of papier-mâché portraying the Madonna riding a white horse fighting the Saracens and commemorating the battle that took place in Scicli between the Arab army and the invading Christian army lead by Count Roger the Norman. During the battle it is said that Our Lady riding a horse and armed of a sword lead the Christians to victory. Palazzo Fava is a magnificent xviii century building, its prospects are remarkable for the balcony banisters adorned with sculptures of griffins that have the heads of an eagle and the body of a lion, and winged horses whose lower part of the body is fish-like. Its urban centre was proclaimed a world heritage site by the UNESCO in 2002.

Among the most impressive baroque monuments the Chiesa di San Bartolomeo dating from the xv century and Palazzo Beneventano an xviii century building, notable for its richly decorated corner cupboard and for the figured corbels of its balconies.

Just outside the town Mount of Saint Matthew has several small churches scattered over the hill like the abandoned church of Saint Matthew that can be seen from Piazza Italia. The church, the former cathedral of Scicli, is the oldest in town.
Another interesting monument is Chiesa della Consolazione located in the Santa Maria la Nova quarry.
