Palaces, Castles and Villas from Sicily
Sicily is a land of castles; built by the Normans, the Swabians and noble families these fortresses, medieval castles and palazzi are imposing symbols of wealth and authority.
Ursino castle - Catania
A stern, massive construction, it was built between 1239 and 1250 by the architect Richard of Lentini, by order of Frederick II of Swabia, on a stretch of high land surrounded by the sea. It has square plan 4 circular and semi-circular towers at each corner, originally it stood high above the sea, but as a result of the lava flow caused by the eruption of Mount Etna in 1669 today it is some hundreds meters from the coast. The entrance is through a pointed archway in the main façade, surmounted by the Swabian coat of arms: an eagle grasping a hare in its talons.

Ursino castle - Catania

Palazzo Biscari is likely the most beautiful secular building in Catania. It was erected after the earthquake in 1693, the South wing of the palace shows a rich decoration of figures and volutes, cherubs and racemes, filing the window frames along the long terrace relieve the sombreness of the dark façade.

Norman Castle of Aci Castello
Built of black lava stone with its characteristic dark color, this Norman fortress of uncertain date stands atop a spur of rock high above the cobalt-blue sea. It was conquered by the Normans of Roger de Hauteville in 1072 after his victory over the Arabs. Although largely ruined today it is still possible to admire the original structure, a tower, a fair part of the central body and most importantly the dominant position over the sea. From this high point one can enjoy a fine panorama of the Faraglioni and the Lachea island. Inside the castle there is a little Museum with an interesting collection of minerals and archaeological items.
The two-towered Maniace Castle in Bronte was named after the Byzantine General that ordered its construction around 1038. It is surrounded by a nice garden and park that houses the relics of Admiral Horatio Nelson, who was granted the castle by King Ferdinand III. Within the walls there is a small church in late-Norman style housing a worth-noting 13th century polyptych.

Castello di Venere - Erice
Although the present building is Norman, legend claims that it was once occupied by a temple dedicated to Venus Erycina. This Normans fortress was surrounded by great walls protected by a series of more advanced towers, the ‘Torri del Balio’ (‘Bailey Towers’). The belvedere offers superb views, over Trapani and its salt plans, the Pepoli turret below, the coast towards Monte Cofano.

Donnafugata castle
Driving from Ragusa to Santa Croce Camerina, one can find the Donnafugata Castle, an imposing construction immersed in a carob woods that characterize this province. The Castle of Donnafugata was built in the 17th century and it was continuously altered until the early years of the 20th cent., when the Baron of Donnafugata added to the façade the elegant Venetian Gothic loggia with its two-light windows surmounted by lacework and rose windows. The castle is surrounded by a vast and beautiful garden, home to exotic plants, a picturesque labyrinth and various follies like a little temple, fountains, and "coffee-house". Its loggia, the Ionic columns together with the rich sequence of rooms on the ‘piano nobile’, all combine to make it one of the most refined patrician country house in southeast Sicily.

Lombardia castle (Enna)
The Lombardia Castle, in Enna, is an example of medieval fortress. It was built by the Swabian Emperors and later enlarged by Frederick III of Aragon. Owes its name to a garrison of Lombard soldiers that stationed here to defend the fortress during the Norman domination. A castle within a castle - that is how this impregnable castle presents itself, with its the pentagonal plan and imposing walls and square towers rising above Enna. Only remains of six towers can still be seen, while the Pisan Tower, decorated with flattop merlons known also as the ‘Eagles’ Tower, has remained intact.

At a lower level there are caves used as granaries and at an higher level the stables, the prisons, and the smithies. A steep stairway cut out in the stone leads to the entrance gate consisted of three doorways once protected by a draw-bridge and then to the top square where one can enjoy a 360° view over the plain with the Madonie and Nebrodi Mountains. Around the castle dug and camouflaged in the rock some cave dwellings, still used as homes,  can be viewed.
Taormina is home to many notable palazzi, the splendid Palazzo Corvaia incorporating three buildings erected in different epochs from the xi through the xv century, the Castle of Santo Stefano set atop the Mount Tauro where once stood the ancient Greek acropolis, the nearby castle of Castelmola.
