Situated in proximity of Ragusa the Castello di Donnafugata derives its name from the Arab Ayn as Jafat (meaning Fountain of Health) that in Sicilian dialect became Ronnafuata. The present structure dates back to the mid-1800s. The style, because of the many refurbishments, is not clearly defined. The building was continuously altered until the early 20C, when Corrado Arezzo transformed the façade into what can be seen today. Externally, an elegant Venetian neo-gothic loggia dominates the central section of the main façade. The trefoil arches become a recurrent motif repeated in the two-light windows throughout the building. A staircase in black stone (pietra pece, a bituminous stone mined locally) ornamented with Neo-Classical statues takes you to the first floor (piano nobile).
