Ragusa and the Iblei region
Noto, a garden of stone
Regarded as the Capital of Sicilian Baroque, Noto is the result of the tragic earthquake of 1693 that destroyed the old city (see below). For the reconstruction of the new town a straightforward, linear plan was chosen with intersections at right angles and wide, parallel streets in accordance with the new Baroque taste. The town was built by local architects, followers of Borromini’s architecture in Rome and fashioned by the Baroque movement that in those times was spreading from all over Europe and beyond to the new Russian capital, St Petersburg. Its perspectives were configured in an entirely original way, flattered and enhanced by façades with curvaceous forms decorated with masks, cherubs and balconies with wrought-iron railings resulting in an incredibly spectacular and harmonious urban complex with majestic buildings in local limestone, which over the years has developed a magnificent gilded and pink patina. Its urban centre was proclaimed a world heritage site by the UNESCO in 2002.

Corso Vittorio Emanuele is the main axis of the town. From Porta Reale, a monumental gateway modelled on a triumphal arch, it runs through three piazzas, each with its own church.
Piazza Immacolata overlooked by the fairly austere Baroque façade of San Francesco all'Immacolata. A stairway leads up to a terrace with a statue of the Virgin in the centre.
Piazza Municipio overlooked on the left by the eye-catching Palazzo Ducezio, and on the right by the wide stairway of the Cathedral. The Cathedral dedicated to Saint Nicholas from Mira has a façade with two tall bell-towers that do not completely obscure the dome (the dome tragically collapsed in 1996). Opposite the Palazzo Ducezio, a well-proportioned building with curvilinear elements, enclosed by a Classical portico.

Via Nicolaci lined with splendid baroque buildings such as Palazzo Nicolacci Villadorata and closed to spectacular effect at the end by the concave façade of theb Chiesa di Montevergini framed between bell-towers. Both sides of the street are lined with fine Baroque buildings: on the left Palazzo Nicolaci with its fabulous balconies ornamented with fantastical cherubs, horses, mermaids, lions and grotesque figures.

On Corso Vittorio Emanuele the church of San Carlo al Corso and the Collegio dei Gesuiti (Jesuitical Monastery). Piazza XVI Maggio with the elegant convex façade of the Chiesa di San Domenico. In front the delightful Villetta d'Ercole, a public garden with a xviii century fountain in the centre named after Heracles. Opposite, stands the xix century Teatro Comunale.

Along the road to Noto Antica (the ruins of ancient Noto) there is the Eremo di San Corrado fuori le Mura: a xviii century sanctuary set in the green countryside. The road then continues past the Santuario di Santa Maria della Scala that preserves a lovely Arabo-Norman arch behind the font. The road reaches the site where the town of old Noto stood before the terrible earthquake of 1693. Beyond Porta Aurea, the gateway to the now deserted, picturesquely overgrown city, the street system remains intact. A few eerie ruins protrude from the rubble and weeds. Among the ruins there are also remains on a necropolis from the ‘Castelluccio’ civilization (xvii – xv century BC).
