Ragusa and the Iblei region
An itinerary of visit
This extreme strip of Sicily derives its present character from an unusual combination of the rural tradition and the urgent need to rebuild entire towns and villages following the earthquake of 1693. This is how towns such as Mòdica, Scicli, Ispica and, above all, Ibla (lower Ragusa) developed. From the Iblei plateau we easily descend to the sea, with white sand beaches running from Santa Croce Camerina to Sampieri and Pozzallo.
Here is mapped out the route we followed in one of the many exploration trips we made in this isolated and little known tip of Ionic Sicily of silent landscapes of stonework and towns with particular atmosphere.

Starting from Catania after the stop at the death-haunted necropolis of Pantalica, the first day is concluded at Palazzolo Acreide
From Palazzolo Acreide we head south towards Buscemi, a small agricultural village, interesting for its museum known as I Luoghi del Lavoro Contadino, scattered across the small town. Eight rooms provide a picture of the life and work of the local people. They include the blacksmith shop, the oil-mill, a farmer and a labourer house, the shoemaker and the carpenter shops, the millstone (where the pressing of grape took place) and, finally, located at Palazzolo Acreide, the water-mill (Mulino di S. Lucia).
Continuing down we arrive at Ragusa, composed by ancient Ibla, almost perfectly intact, and the new city Ragusa built close by on the hill slope, with aristocratic palazzi.

Ragusa

Leaving Ragusa we come to Chiaramonte Gulfi a small noble little town up in the mountains. In its proximity lies a sanctuary where according to legend, a group of bulls carried a statue of the Virgin that they had found at the nearby shore, the story is painted on four medallions within the building.
Continuing towards the coast amongst the typical dry-stone walls and majestic carob trees we come to the Castle of Donnafugata, surrounded by eight hectares of park land, and finally to Camarina. with the archaeological ruins of the Greek city and the bay below.
Leaving Camarina, we continue on towards fishing village Pozzallo. Based in Pozzallo the first day we visit Modica, one of the most picturesque cities with its churches and striking Baroque sceneries, the real artistic emblem of south-eastern Sicily.

In the second day from Pozzallo we continue along the coast to Sampieri, where we turn inland and come to Scicli with its beautiful palazzos and cathedrals.
After Scicli our next stop is Cavad'Ispica, a termites’ nest of caves and burial niches mysteriously excavated by over the centuries in a long narrow valley. Leaving Cava d'Ispica, we reach Ispica and the "Della Forza" Archaeological Park where important archaeological finds have been made.

The tour is concluded with the visit of Noto, the most famous of the Baroque cities, and a beautiful excursion to Vendicari nature reserve one of the last example of the beautiful natural landscape of Sicily
