Sacsayhuamán - the head of the puma

The first Spaniards thought it was the work of devil: their eyes had never seen so high walls, enormous towers of huge stones. Everything was so huge, so perfect, stone over stone, big, heavy as they would have been pieces of mountains moved by a strange force. Seen from there, the city of Cusco was the lying stone puma with the Koricancha corresponding to the feline's genitalia and Sacsayhuaman with its towers and walls was the head.

The fortress-temple of Sacsahuaman (meaning "satisfied falcon") lies immediately above Cuzco, the main front of the building, facing the north, is a formidable system of three tiers of 22 zigzagging ramparts and flanked by massive stonewalls entirely built of enormous stones, some of which stand 5 meters high and weigh over 125 tons. To enter them you have to cross three facades: tiupunco (tiu= sand and punco=door), acahuanapunco and viracochapunco in honour to Viracocha God. Perfectly assembled with no mortar the stones are often joined in complex and irregular surfaces that would appear to be a nightmare for the stonemason. It's hard to comprehend what Sacsayhuaman would have looked like 500 years ago: the chroniclers described the existence of three great towers that once stood over the ramparts while as many as 5000 warriors lived in the citadel. Muyoc-marca (Round Precinct), Sallac-marca (Precinct with Water), Paucar-marca (Precious Precinct) were the names of the towers. Muyu Marca probably reached a total height of 20 meters with 4 superposed floors. It was an amazing work that generated the admiration of the chroniclers.
The Spaniards destroyed everything and the site was used as a quarry to provide stone for the colonial Cusco.
Today of the higher part of the ruins there are only a few slight vestiges of the towers.

On the other side of the Sacsayhuaman's grassy plaza, where IntiRaymi takes place, stays Rodadero a giant rock hill with numerous stairwells and benches carved into the rock.

Off to the northeast, on another hill, there is a giant statue of Jesus and below, Cusco appears as a vast expanse. Besides, you will be able to distinguish summits such as the Ausangate, the Pachatusán and the Cinca, places that are believed to be inhabited by Apus or powerful spirits that govern the mountains.
