Peru's archaeological legacy
Peru inevitably evokes images of Machu Picchu and the Inca Empire. The major constructions left by the Inca rulers are found all in the Cusco region, the capital of Tahuantinsuyu the great empire of the Incas. Here we can find remains of the impressive road system that crossed the Andes, the megalithic constructions of the old towns in the Urubamba valley, and the lost city of Machu Picchu, sacred and monumental example of the ancient Andean spirit.
Cusco, capital of the Inca Empire was heart of the Inca political system that controlled a large portion of South America. Cusco was conceived as a major administrative and ceremonial centre with palaces, squares, streets and public buildings, which have survived through the centuries to this day. Following the Spanish conquest, unfortunately very little left of the original buildings, and today only some walls remains integrated in the colonial houses. Although many of the chief Inca buildings no longer exist, save for odd stretches of wall here and there, the grid of the colonial and modern town basically follows the layout of the Inca capital, and despite all the Spanish palaces and churches have been erected destroying the ancient Inca palaces (Sacsayhuaman has been used as quarry since 1950) what is left can still impress the visitor.
The Koricancha temple The temple was built during the reign of the Inca Wiracocha around the year 1200 A.D., and later with the Inca Pachacutec the temple was embellished or decorated.

The fortress of Sacsayhuaman The single most important Inca structure rises north of Cusco. Designed by Pachacútec, the fortress was begun under Túpac Yupanqui and completed under Huayna Cápac. Construction took 77 years and the effort of 30,000 labourers.

The Urubamba valley is full of impressive and very important archaeological sites. In both Pisac Ollantaytambo you can find pre-Hispanic archaeological ruins as beautiful as the ruins of Machu Picchu.
Archaeological complex of Ollantaytambo An ancient fortified city 65 km NW of Cusco probably the best-preserved Inca town with its intimate integration of the built form with the natural environment, the unity of its architecture, and the sheer perfection of its cut-stone masonry.
The religious nucleus of Pisac Situated in the Urubamba valley, the site features important Inca ruins.

Machu Picchu: the lost city
The citadel of Machu Picchu is Peru’s most important historic monument. Set between two peaks at 2,400 m. elevation, near a precipice overlooking the Urubamba River immersed in the beautiful cloud forest, the complex blends in stunningly well with its formidable surroundings. Even by modern standards, the Inca citadel is a powerful symbol of architectural skill.
The flawlessness of construction at Machu Picchu is in fact so impressive that mythical explanations have been advanced to account for it. Experts agree, at any rate, that the site dates from the period (1438-1532) marking the height of Inca civilization and power (itself the final manifestation in the 3,000-year sequence of Andean cultures).
