Cusco

Cradle of the Inca civilization, Cusco is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the western hemisphere. The ruins of Inca monuments, the architectural blend of native and colonial elements together with the plateresque cathedral and churches built by the Spanish conquistadors give to Cusco its special beauty. The city of Cusco also spelled as Cuzco, (Qosqo in Quechua meaning ‘navel’ or ‘centre’) at a height of 3,350 masl, surrounded by mountains more than 6,000 metres high is one of the highest cities of the world. By the 1430's under the rule of the great Pachacutec, Cusco became the capital of Tawantinsuyu the great Inca Empire. Although many of the chief Inca buildings no longer exist, save for odd stretches of wall here and there, the grid of the colonial and modern town basically follows the layout of the Inca capital. Colonial architecture has produced spectacularly ornate churches with elaborately carved portals that blend Spanish and local culture.

The main points of interest in the city are the historic Plaza de Armas with the Cathedral and the Jesuit church, the temple of Koricancha with the convent of Santo Domingo, The church and convent of La Merced, Hatun Rumiyoc street where you can find the famous stone with 12 corners, the famous San Blas quarter filled with workshops and stores of Cusco's most renowned artisans; and the many churches of the city with the finest examples of colonial goldsmith work and valuable collections of canvases by the dominant Cusqueña school.

Places covered by the characteristic mysticism of the Incan religion a sacred geography where numerous huacas' or power spots where all connected by a system of ceques, lines all emanating from the navel of earth.
