Etymologically, Taman Ayun means the beautiful garden, which is as a source of world happiness. Taman Ayun, built in 1634, was the state temple of the Mengwi kingdom. The temple is situated halfway along the line running between the Gunung Pengelengan, the local sacred mountain, and the coast. In cosmological terms this is the point situated midway of the line identified as the world axisis between the heavens and the see, seen as the underworld. The whole plant is the symbol of the mountain Meru floating in a sea of milk. The three courtyards represent the three parts of the world structure: gnomes, humans and gods or, perhaps, it can be seen also as the Trimurti Brahma Vishnu Shiva.

The whole complex is located on an island in the middle of a river and accessed by a bridge guarded by the usual door guardians and the first Candi Bentar (split gate). The temple plan is the standard plan with three courtyards. As soon as you pass the first split gate on your right there is a large double roofed pavillon with statues representing the a cock fighting scene. On the left, in the Kelod-Kauh corner, there is a small rectangular pool with a fountain in the middle.
The second court yard is accessed by a small candi bentar, on the left there is a tall kulkul tower (alarm tower) that is possible to climb, with views of the entire complex.

The inner courtyard (Jeroan) is surrounded by a low brick wall with a monumental Kori Agung that usually remains closed. The Jeroan is accessible only by Hindus, anyhow the a low wall allow to look inside.
The Jeroan contains various structures like multitiered merus and pavilions for the gods, when they descend to attend festivals, and is surrounded by and a moat; this moat is the bathing place for the gods when they descend accompanied by winged nymphs, the widadari. Among the various meru and bale we notice at the northern side one padmasana with a sculpture of Garuda.
