The temple of Gunung Kawi (‘Marriage Mountain’) probably erected in the 11th century, is regarded as the monument of Balinese past. It was discovered by Europeans on July 1920.
The site is located in a river gorge surrounded by rice terraces. From the car park there is a stairway that descends steeply down to the river bottom. On the steps leading to the tombs, craftsmen sell their wares. The site is dedicated to the kings and queens of the Udayana Dynasty. Two groups of rock-hewn tombs are carved out on both sides of the river bank in the shape of East Javanese Candi and inserted in high niches. The kings and queens 'tombs' face each other across the valley. The first group of five Kings Tombs is on the eastern bank of the river and the second group of four queens tombs on the western bank. Since no human ashes were found in any of the tombs, it might be that here we have only rather the mausoleums of deified princes and rulers. In front of the Kings Tombs there is a pool receiving water from the upper terrace where the memorials are located. At the right-hand corner of the Kings Tombs there are the remains of a rock hewn cloister dedicated to the priests who maintained the site and carried out devotions. There is a similar chamber near the Queen Tomb.

To the South of the group of five tombs there is a big Pura. From a side gate of the first enclosure of the temple there is the acces to the old main monastery that may be entered only on barefoot. The complex includes rock-hewn monastic cells and a monolith in the middle of yet unknown significance. It is believed that these monasteries are the remnants of a cloister of the 9th Century.
To the South of the main system more stone-carved monk cells are found, but of smaller size and lesser complex of the main monastery.

The embedding into the landscape and environment suggests a deep symbolic meaning. The river can be interpreted as a deliberate means of separation and confrontation, especially when analyzing the position of the two groups of the carved graves. Also the monasteries are separated by the river, but in this case a logically comprehensible structure is not readily apparent.
