Pejeng
A trip to Bali rural traditional area.
The visit the rural area of Pejeng with extensive and ancient irrigated rice cultivation gives you the chance to see some interesting temples in a quiet atmosfere togheter with Balinese people without annoied tourist hanging around you.
Pura Samuan Tiga. This old temple, dating from around the 11th century, features interesting and distinctive art deco style made famous by the Balinese artist Gusti Lempad. The Samuan Tiga name derives from a legend. In the 11th century, a meeting (samuan) is said to have been held here among the gods of three (tiga) warring religious sects after they had defeated the demon king Mayadanawa. You can see the Gusti Nyoman Lempad's influence throughout parts of the temple (such as the main temple gate).

Pura Kebo Edan (temple of the crazy buffalo). This temple was once the site of a ritual tantric cult, this is confirmed by the statue it contains, a 3.60 m high statue known as the Giant of Pejeng. Approaching the temple from the road, you can see at first only the high temple walls immersed among rice fields, after the entrance through a Candi Bentar you get into an empty court except for a pavilion which serves as workshop for the restoration of the temple. at a square angle from the entrance gateway a Candi Bentar give entrance to the second courtyard, the inner temple area. Inside, morover the usual bale pavilions in the rear of the temple, there are several shrines lined along the wall, including the one which houses an imposing stone statue dated of the 13th or 14th Century, probably Bhairava dancing on a dead body. Certainly the most striking feature of this temple, the colossus is a human figure famous for his huge penis. Other interpretations say it may represent Bima, a hero of the Mahabharata. However the statue is wrapped in poleng cloths.

Pura Penataran Sasih. This unassuming temple in the village of Pejeng houses a unique legacy of the Dongsong culture (ca 300 AD): the famous 'Moon of Bali', the gong, a masterpiece of casting technology, with about 1.6m in diameter is the largest single piece cast drum in the world. Pura Penataran Sasih has an unusual structure different from the traditional temple layout. The complex consists different courtyards arranged in a "nesting" structure which recalls the tatami schemes used to cover the floor of Japanese houses. It is difficult to see the gong as it is kept on a high stone base in the north-eastern corner of the complex. This hourglass-shaped drum is decorated with ornaments and stylized male faces said to resemble patterns from both East Jaya and Vietnam. The name 'Moon of Bali' derives from a folk story in which it is described as 13 moon fallen from the sky, and today is an object of worship.

Pura Pusering Jagat 'temple of the Navel of the World' is 100m South from the main road of Pura Penataran Sasih. The point of interest here is the elaborately carved holy water vessel whose exterior is sculpted with a detailed relief of the Hindu myth of ‘the churning of the sea of milk’. Carved from a single block of sandstone you can just make out some of the figures including the undulating naga ropes and a number of dancing deities supporting them. During our visit there was a sort of ceremony with dancing lessons to young girls and a cock-fight.
Bali, like many other nations, has banned cock fighting as a cruel sport, although the practice is still allowed for ceremonial purposes. These fighting birds are as much a part of Balinese Hindu rites as the burning of incense and giving offerings to the gods. Cockfights are held in a ring, usually they begin toward late afternoon and run three or four hours until sunset. About nine or ten separate matches comprise a program. A man slip into the ring with a cock and seek to find there a logical opponent for it. The roosters have their spurs affixed with razor sharp, pointed steel swords. The two cocks are then placed facing one another in the center of the ring. The beginning and the end of te 21 second long match is marked by the beating of a slit gong. The animals are picked up, fluffed, pulled, prodded and put in the center of the ring and the fight begins. The roosters fly almost immediately at one another in a wing beating, head-thrusting, leg-kicking explosion of animal fury. Within moments one or the other drives home a solid blow with his spur. The handler whose cock has delivered the blow immediately picks the bird up and set it down to show that he is firm, while the wounded cock simply expires immediately as it is placed down. The crowd surrounding this melodrama follows in near silence. Cockfighting rules are very ancient, written down in palm leaf manuscripts passed on from generation to generation as part of the cultural tradition of the villages.
