The temple is located at the foot of Gunung Batukaru, Bali's second-highest volcano, just below the the primary forest and surrounded by terraced fields. Originally built during the 11th century the temple has been rebuilt in 1959. Pura Luhur Batukaru is one of the six imperial temples and one of nine directional temples meant to protect the western region, it remains an extremely sacred site for Bali's Hindu population. Many of the complex's grounds remain off-limits to visitors for various ceremonies and events throughout the year.

In front of the main temple there is a rised platform with a Kulkul a tall alarm tower with statues of directional protectors. Since the temple is located in the dense jungle, far away from the nearest settlement, it is not protected by a high surrounding walls.

The temple is divided into two courtyards on different levels. We enter the first courtyard through the Candi Bentar inside two long open pavilions and some rice barns. Among them the lotus throne for Uma Batari in the manifestation of Durga, with the figure of Wisnu riding Garuda and two smaller shrines with split gates.

The main courtyard can be entered through another Candi Bentar (no access to the tourists), this is the most sacred part and, in accordance to tradition, is located towards the mountain, inside there are various pavilions and several multistage Merus for the worship of the gods, the seven roofed Meru is dedicated to the deity of the mountain Batukau.

To the East a path leads to a third smaller courtyard entered by a split gate with inside some pavilions and a group of stone figures of deities. Attached to that there is a fountain for the purification of the worshippers. The water source feeds the artificial lake located few meters south, in the middle of the lake there is a small island. In Balinese mythology lakes alongside mountains play an important role and the lakes Bratan, Buyan and Tambelingan to the nearby mountain here find their worship.
