The best examples of Javanese Hindu architecture
Candi Lara Jonggrang
The name Prambanan refers to a complex of temples that includes Candi Lara Jonggrang Candi Sewu and its satellites.
The Candi Lara Jonggrang complex comprises three square yards surrounded by walls and gradually risings towards the centre. Nothing of this external enclosure has survived. The innermost enclosure that contains the main temple complex is surrounded by the middle enclosure with 224 small ancillary shrines most of these are in terrible states of disrepair, little more than piles of stones whose original purposes can only be imagined.
The inner precinct includes eight temples in the sikkara form. The three main temples are dedicated to the Trimurti, Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu. Each temple is faced by a smaller temple dedicated to the vehicle of the relevant god. Only the one in the centre (Candi Nandi) contains the bull Nandi while the other two are empty,. In addition there are other two small flanking temples (candi apit) whose function is unknown.

Shiva temple
The Siva temple is an imposing spire in the shikhara style built on a raised square podium. The podium is surmounted by a balustrade decorated with a series of miniature shrines with the peculiar fluted stupa-like called ‘ratna’ and with panels with the heavenly maidens called bidadari (the Indonesian apsara), musicians and dancers. The fluted stupa have been placed also on the shikhara. Various gargoyles are present in the form of a makara (the mythical beast composed by a crocodile and other animal like fish, elephant, etc.).
The external walls of the temple podium are decorated with kinara-kinari panels: a composition of a lion with on both sides the tree of heaven with a pair of kinnara.
The temple has four entrances each with a staircase leading to the raised platform through imposing gates fashioned like miniature shrines. The balustrades of the stairs are decorated with makara heads. On the upper part of the shikkara spire there are 24 panels with reliefs of lokapala (dikpala) the protectors of the directions.
The inner walls of the balustrade are fully covered by bas-reliefs illustrating an Indonesian version of the Ramayana. The story can be followed starting from the East entrance and proceeding in a clockwise direction. The panels narrate, with some variations from the original Hindu text, how Sita is abducted by Ravana, and salvaged by the god Rama with the help of monkey king Hanuman and his army.

The main shikhara has four doorways surmounted by a kala head that give access to the inner chambers. The east chamber connects to central chamber that houses a three meter high statue of Shiva Mahadeva. In the West chamber: Ganesha, attributes: rosary, hatchet, skull bowl and a piece of his right tusk. Headdress: skull and lunar crescent like his father Siva. In the North chamber: Durga Mahisasuramardini in the act of killing a bull-demon. She stands on the back of a bull holding its tail with her right hand and her left hand clutches the hair of the demon. Eight arms: arrow, sword, chakra, bow, shield & conch. According to the legend the statue represent the princess Lara Jonggrang who was cursed by her deceived lover, prince Bandung, and turned into stone. In the South chamber there is Shiva Mahaguru (Agatsya).

The main chamber of Visnu temple contains a Vishnu statue. Four hands in a standing position. His attributes are a chakra and a sankha. In the external wall of the balustrade of the temple, Vishnu is depicted in his various personifications, while the inner wall of the balustrade has reliefs depicting the story of Krishna and his brother Balarama.
In front of Shiva temple stands the Nandi temple with the bull Nandi and statues of Surya and Chandra. Surya holds a padma flower in his two hands, Chandra has a some plant in his right hand and a dwaja (banner) in his left hand. Chandra has a third eye on his forehead, this is a characteristic of Lord Siva.

Part of the same complex is Candi Sewu the second-largest Buddhist shrine in Indonesia, after Borobudur. With the meaning '1.000 temples' Candj Sewu has the largest ever seen 'dvarapala' statues, these statues are shown in the half-kneeling position draped with a serpents and carrying a club, they have the role of spiritual guardians.
