The most iconic panorama in Indonesia

Wake up at three AM, all the guest have their jeep driver to reach the view point of Pananjakan (2770m) on time for the sunrise over the famous view of the spectacular set of volcanoes in the ancient Tengger Caldera. The view embraces the approximately 10km diameter of the caldera with the cones of Bromo, Batok and Kursi with the cone of Mt. Semeru in the distance.
The complex was formed by repeated eruptions each of which created new volcanoes and calderas. Mount Bromo, the only active crater, keeps spewing off white sulphurous smoke. It sits inside the massive caldera surrounded by the sea of sand (Laut Pasir) of fine volcanic sand.

The next destination is the valley inside the caldera ring. The jeep rides weather-beaten tracks from the lush savanna of Mount Penanjakan down to the bottom of the caldera where you get off. The area is covered by volcanic ashes blown by the wind called the sea of sand. We crossed the lunar landscape walking along the foot of Mount Batok (2440m) a dormant volcano at the northern centre of the huge caldera. Now covered with vegetation, this perfectly shaped mountain rises from the Sea of Sands. In recent times, the mountain has witnessed some growth of vegetation that gives it a meadow green and yellow colour.

At the foot of Mount Batok there is the Hindu temple known as the Poten and used by the native Tengger people, one of Indonesian tribes that live around Bromo Mountain. The Tenggerese are being known as obedient Hindu followers. For them, Bromo Mountain is sacred. Once in a year they hold the ceremony of Kasada as a thanks giving to the Lord. This ceremony is always held in midnight in full moon when people offer food and money by throwing it into the crater in memory of their mythical prince who sacrified himself for his family.

From the Hindu temple a steep 250-steps path leads from the foot of the mountain to the ridge of the sulfuric crater of Mt Bromo. You will notice vendors selling dried flowers, mostly Javanese edelweiss, a very bad practice that is leading to the extinction of the specie.

Small thatched pavilions on the uppermost terraces house additional sculptures. Some are figural with their hands in the same position of the statue of the guardian of the sixth terrace. Another sculpture is a linga with two balls and an anatomically correct rendering of the upper portion of a penis.
On the top terrace there is a stone building in the form of a truncated pyramid. From this terrace the whole temple compound can be seen clearly.
