Our trip
Jogyakarta
Our first experience in Jogyakarta is with Malioboro the most famous street of the town. Located in the heart of Jogya, this is the city’s main street, and was once the ceremonial avenue for the Sultan to and from the Keraton. Today, Malioboro is the place to come to shop. Stalls street vendors and stores line up the streets selling mainly batik and other stuff. The only way to go in Malioboro is on foot or ride a ‘becak’ or the horse-drawn carts called ‘andong’. After sunset the street becomes alive with merchants opening up ‘lesehan’ the tents serving all kinds of local cuisine with the locals sitting down cross-legged. Frightened by the large town we moved directly in a charming hotel in Borobudur.

Prambanan
The temples of Prambanan are the best examples of Javanese Hindu architecture. The name Prambanan refers to the largest Hindu temple complex in Java with the great Shiva temple and its wealth of sculptural panels illustrating an Indonesian version of the Ramayana. Part of the same complex is Candi Sewu the second-largest Buddhist shrine in Indonesia
After the visit to Prambanan in the late afternoon we moved to King Boko Palace with the few remains of the palace complex built in the eighth century on a hill with view over Prambanan temples and Merapi Mountain as the background.

Ramayana ballet
We concluded the day attending the Ramayana ballet a performance held in the open stage of Prambanan temple complex. The Ramayana presented in the performance is a Javanese version adapted from the Hindu epic which travelled to Java from India. The story, presented in the typical Javanese dance accompanied by gamelan, can be summarized in four scenes, the kidnapping of Sita, Hanuman mission to Alengka, the death of Rawana, and the final rejoining of Rama and-Sita.
The major characters are Rama with his arch, his brother Laksamana and Sita betrothed of Rama. Then we have the villain characters, the first is Rawana the demon king of Lanka that kidnaps Sita, Marica a ‘rakshasa’ (demon) in his role in the kidnapping of Sita that transforms himself in a golden deer and finally is killed by Rama, a scene that is perfectly represented on one bas-relief of Shiva temple. Then there is Hanoman, the white powerful monkey succeeded in taking back Sita from Rawana.
At the end of the story when Sita returns, Rama refuses her considered impure, to prove her virginity Sita is asked to burn herself. Sita heroically accepts the ordeal and when finally she does not burn, Rama accepts her as his wife.
The performance is strengthened by the particular lighting arrangement and the beautiful make up of the dancers describing the various characters. There is also the spectacular scene of the Hanoman that initially would be burned alive but succeeded in burning Alengka kingdom owned by Rawana.

Borobudur
This colossal Buddhist monument has the same importance of Angkor in Cambodia and Bagan in Myanmar. Built from two million stone blocks in the form of a massive symmetrical stupa, the monument was conceived as a Buddhist vision of the cosmos. A series of narrow galleries covered of bas reliefs narrating tales of the life of Buddha and spiralling for about 5km lead the pilgrim up to the top circular platforms with the 72 latticed stupas that surround the large central stupa, a layout this that recall the design of a tantrik mandala.

Candi Cetho
We leaved Borobudur directed to Blitar and East Java. On the way we climbed the slopes Gunung Lawu on the border of Central and East Java, this is one of the holiest mountains in Java with mysterious Hindu temples. We stopped to visit Candi Cetho, a temple dedicated to Shivaism and fertility worship. Reached Blitar we stayed overnight at Tugu Blitar Hotel

Panataran
In the morning we paid our visit to Panataran. Located north of Blitar on the southwest slope of Mount Kelud, Panataran is the best preserved Hindu complex of East Java. The temple is the finest examples of East Javanese architecture and exhibits beautiful bas reliefs with stories from the Ramayana.

Gunung Kelud
On our way to Bromo, in the afternoon we stopped to visit the Kelud volcano known for its large explosive eruptions. To get to the crater you have to walk through a 200m long tunnel, built under the Japanese occupation. A path snakes up the side of the crater up to a viewpoint of the summit crater. The whole scene is composed by numerous craters with a central lake partially submerged by a lava dome that rose through the center of the crater lake during the recent activity.

Bromo-Tengger-Semeru-National-Park
After a drive along the steep slopes around Gunung Bromo at about 9 PM our driver finally took us to Bromo Cottages, constructed on the slope of a hill nearby Pasuruan and conveniently situated for the next day early morning departure for the Pananjakan view point over Mount Bromo, one of the most iconic panorama in Indonesia.
Wake up at three AM, all the guest meet their jeep drivers to reach the view point of Pananjakan (2770m) on time for the sunrise over the famous view of the spectacular set of volcanoes in the ancient Tengger Caldera. The view embraces the approximately 10km diameter of the caldera with the cones of Bromo, Batok and Kursi with the cone of Mt. Semeru in the distance.
In the afternoon we covered the distance to Surabaya airport (about 70km) in around 4 hours due to heavy traffic and congestion.
