Hub of the urban plan, with the baroque Cathedral (Duomo), dedicated to Sant’Agata, patron saint of the city. The austere apses made of lava stones and the transept are what remains of the original Norman structure (xi century). Its monumental size and the high and narrow windows show that the Duomo was conceived as a fortified church. Inside the right apse of the transept contains Sant’Agata chapel in Renaissance style and the funeral monument of viceroy Ferdinando de Acua (xv century). All around the square, there are beautiful buildings.

Eastwards the Sant'Agata Abbey (Badia di Sant'Agata) one of Vaccarini masterpieces with its Borromini style. The magnificent octagonal dome, with an unusual concave-convex façade, the contrast between the white limestone and the grey plaster of the wall attracts immediately the attention.

In the middle of Piazza del Duomo, the popular elephant fountain designed by Vaccarini in 1736, on inspiration of Bernini obelisk with the same name in Piazza della Minerva in Rome. The statue of an elephant made of lava, perhaps of the roman period, and Syene granite Egyptian 3.61 metres high obelisk with hieroglyphics of Isis' cult (some researchers maintain it was one of the goals of the Roman Circus) a really unique mix of Christian and pagan symbols.

Besides the Cathedral with an elegant façade, embellished by the contrasting white pilasters on a black background the xviii-century clergymen's seminar (Palazzo Arcivescovile), which reaches the xvi-century enormous fortified ancient walls. In the walls the baroque Uzeda door, used to be open on the old harbour now covered by the new city.
On the northern side of the square there is the Palazzo Municipale, completed in 1714 by Vaccarini, to replace the pre-existing medieval Loggia.

At the beginning of Via Garibaldi there is the xix-century Amenano fountain, whose water comes form an underground river. Behind the fountain the suggestive fish market with a colourful, noisy and Arabian-like flavour. Fountain of the 7 Rivers (Fontana dei 7 Canali) for years the only water source in this neighbourhood, used liberally by everyone in the food market.
