Inca Trail Day 4: Trekkers' Hotel to Machu Picchu

The next day we left while it was still dark in order to get to Intipunku, the Sun Gate, before dawn. Unfortunately although it was the dry season the weather was a bit unsettled and Machu Picchu was shrouded in mist. Fortunately the weather improved later but every now and then mist would swirl around the ruins giving them an even more ethereal look than normal. To leave the Trekker Hotel, you'll need to pass through a checkpoint and show your paid Inca Trail ticket. Then it's two hours of mostly flat terrain before you come to a bunch of steps leading to Intipunku. A large group of hikers gathered at the Sun Gate to watch the lost city of Machu Picchu in the light of dawn.

From Intipunku we ambled down the long inclination by which Inca emissaries arrived and and left Machu Picchu on their journeys up and down the giant Andean road system. We started to have our first close view of the complex: it occupies a narrow ridge, with its temples and houses spilling over the edges into the emerald forest. Behind it, Huana Picchu, soars another 300 metres to a pinnacle of stone and clouds.
