Tangalle

The golden sands of Medilla beach

Tangalle is an unremarkable little town no more than a line of dusty shops and cafés plus the usual clock tower in the middle of a chaotic bus station. The town is set in one of the South’s most beautiful stretches of coastline dotted with coves and beaches where the 2004 tsunami damage has already been repaired for the most part.
South of Tangalle the Medilla beach stretches for several kilometres, a long straight swathe of golden sand lined with guesthouses. We stayed in the Ibis guesthouse, the best one, a pair of attractive white buildings set amid a hammock-slung sandy garden facing the ocean.

Based in Tangalla we visited the cave temples of Mulkirigala, the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary in combination with the mysterious red-soil plateau at Ussangoda, Wewurukannala temple with its giant Buddha statue and the whale-watching trip from Mirissa.

Reached from Tangalle in a couple of hours by car, Mirissa is the starting point for the boat trips to view the blue whales, which between December and April can be seen just a few kilometres offshore. Boats leave from the village’s picturesque harbour, in the south-eastern corner of the bay.
During their annual migration between the Bay of Bengal to the Arabian Sea (heading west in April, and returning in the opposite direction in Dec/Jan) blue and sperm whales passes around the coast of Sri Lanka. The southernmost point of the island is the best place to look for these giant mammals where the continental shelf on which Sri Lanka sits is at its narrowest, with ocean depths of 1km within 6km of the coast. During our whale trip we spotted a blue whale with its baby whale swimming in the shallow waters a couple of miles in front of Weligama.
Around 1km east there is the bay of Mirissa with a narrow strip of sand beach backed by coconut palms which manage to camouflage most signs of human presence.
