Galle Fort
A perfectly preserved colonial town
Founded in the 16th century by the Portuguese Galle is Sri Lanka’s oldest city. The fortified city we see today was built by the Dutch in the xvii c and still exists with few changes and with its wide streets lined with houses, each with its own open veranda, is the best example of colonial architecture in South and South-East Asia.

The vehicular entrance to Galle Fort is through the Main Gate (British 1873) in the heavily fortified impressive section of ramparts facing the new town. The original Portuguese fortifications were enlarged by the Dutch which named the new defences the the Sun Bastion (East), Moon Bastion (North) and the Star Bastion (West). We started to follow the path that follows the bastions from the Clock Tower (1882) erected by the British in 1883, here 109 cannons were operated by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). We soon directed anticlockwise to the Star Bastion and followed the path on top of the Aeolus Bastion, still in military use, the Clippenberg bastion, the Neptune Bastion, the Triton Bastion. Just in front of the Triton Bastion there is the nice former Old Kaffir Hospital / British Pavillon Hotel (today the Rampart Hotel) close by the Buddhist Sudharmalaya Vihara (1889) with its white dagoba.

The southernmost point of the Fort is called Flag Rock Bastion from the Dutch signalling post that was here. Here young “fort jumpers” for a tip fly off the bastion down the sheer drop. A path heads East along of the southern stretch of the ramparts overlooking the lighthouse. The white Meera Mosque (xx c) looks more a Portuguese Baroque church with only a couple of tiny minarets and some Arabic scribbles. Topped by the lighthouse (xx c) is Point Utrecht Bastion with below the ruined British powder magazine, from the lighthouse you can climb down to a small section of beach. The fort ramparts continue along the ocean-facing side of Hospital Street. The Ackersloot Bastion (1789) named after the Dutch Admiral who captured Galle from the Portuguese in 1640. Here there is the great Bread Fruit Tree, the first one planted in Sri Lanka.

We then reach the Great Warehouse now occupied by the Maritime Museum, a long ochre structure punctuated by windowswith in the middle the Old Gate, the original entrance to the Fort before the construction of the Main Gate in 1873. The arch (1669) is inscribed with the coat of arms of the VOC (Vereenigde Oost-indische Compagnie, Dutch East India Company), while the arch facing the exterior is decorated with the British crest, added when the British took charge of Galle in 1796. At the eastern end of the Maritime Museum there is a Bell Tower.

Galle Fort

At the crossroad the Old Dutch Government House and the still in service Post Office, with its old time atmosphere of the interior. Along Church Street is the Romanesque looking All Saints’ Church, while few steps down the road the restored Dutch Reformed Church (1755) with its slightly Italian style of the façade. The car park in the north-eastern corner of the Fort is almost completely covered by handsome old Indian rain trees.

Being impossible to find an accommodation within Galle Fort, we moved northward towards Hikkaduwa. Something like 15 km north of Galle in a little village called Dodanduwa next to Hikkaduwa city we found a family run guest house in front of a pleasant broad stretch of sand. Here a long string of guesthouses, palm-shack restaurants and other improvised buildings line up along the oceanfront, with nearby a fishing post.
