Hindu Temples - the Nagara style

The Shastras, the ancient texts on Hindu architecture, classify temples into three different orders: the Nagara or ‘northern’ style, the Dravida or ‘southern‘ style, and the Vesara or hybrid style which can be seen in the Deccan. The North Indian Nagara style which developed for the fifth century is characterized by a beehive shaped tower (called a shikhara, in northern terminology) made up of layer upon layer of architectural elements such as kapotas and gavaksas, all topped by a large round cushion-like element called an amalaka, with the visual effect of a mountain – the Kailasha or Meru of the scriptures. The plan is based on a square but the walls are sometimes so broken up that the tower often gives the impression of being circular. Moreover, in later developments such as in the Chandella temples, the central shaft was surrounded by many smaller reproductions of itself, creating a spectacular visual effect resembling a fountain.

Built by the Chandella rulers of Central India mark the culmination of the Nagara style. The temples of Khajuraho most famous for the erotic sculpture are also one of the examples of wondrous carvings covering the exterior walls.

At the centre of a group of sculpted stones shrines , the Triloknath temple has a typical Nagari architecture and sculptural artistry. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, inside there is a life-sized stone image of three faced Siva (Trilokinath) with Parvati in his lap and mounted on a bull. Along with the main deity, Idols of Narda and Sharda and many Hindu gods are also worshipped.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in his form as Vaidyanath or the "Lord of Physicians". It has long been a symbol of veneration and a vast number of pilgrims visit this ancient temple the year around. Tantriks and yogis admit that they travel to Baijnath to seek some of the healing powers possessed by Shiva. Incidentally, the water at Baijnath is reputed to possess remarkable digestive properties.
The Temple is a good example of Nagari style. It consists of a puri or adytum surmounted by a spire and of a mandapa or front hall covered with a low pyramid shaped roof. The adytum, which contains the linga, is entered through a small anteroom with two pillars in antis. In front of the mandapa rises a porch on four columns, the south and north wall of the mandapa are adorned with a balcony window. The four corners are strengthened by means of miniature sikhara temples, each containing two niches with images. Smaller niches are found between the entrance and balcony windows. Images are of goddess Chamunda, Surya the Sun God, Kartikeya, son of Lord Shiva. A life sized stone Nandi, stands at the entrance. In the temple compound there are other auxiliary shrines and various stone carvings.
