Archaeological Museums |
|
Sicily has a number of extraordinary museums containing priceless artefacts and artworks.
The Regional Archaeological Museum of Syracuse, dedicated to the archaeologist Paolo Orsi who pioneered the excavation and research of most important Sicilian sites. It displays remains from Pre- and Proto-History going back to Neolithic, Bronze age and the Greek age, notably from
Doric colonies of Megara Hyblaea and Syracuse, and others from Gela and Agrigento.
The Archaeological Museum of Giardini Naxos exhibits items from Neolithic, Bronze, Iron, Greek, Byzantine coming from the Naxos settlement.
The Regional Archaeological Museum in Aidone, housed in a former Capuchins convent, collects specimens from Greek and Roman times entirely coming from the
archaeological site of
Morgantina.

The Regional Archaeological Museum of Agrigento, housed into the restored convent of S. Nicola. The 470 BC Telamon, reconstructed in the room dedicated to the temple of Zeus Olympion, is the museum’s most attractive item.

The Salinas Regional Archaeological Museum housed in a sixteenth-century Olivella convent in Palermo. Among all the interesting items there is the Room of the Metope of Selinunte. This room owes its denomination to the the ancient
limestone Metopes coming from Selinunte temples. They are: the Metopa representing the
capture of Europe (temple C); the Metopa representing two divinities on a cart and rampant horses from the acropolis of Selinunte; the Metopa representing Perseo that kills the Medusa in presence of Atena
(temple C); the Metopa (from the pronaos of the temple E of Selinunte) representing Artemidee that makes to kill the hunter Atteone from her
dogs; the Metopa representing Herakles and the cercopi (temple C).

The Baglio Anselmi Museum, housed inside the Baglio Anselmi in Marsala, a former wine factory built in the 19th century, displays a remarkable Punic ship and illustrates the history of Lilybaeum, a small town founded around 307 BC by refugees of the close Motya Island that had been destroyed by the Syracusan Tyrant Dionysius.
The Hyblaean Archaeological Museum of
Ragusa. It Displays items illustrating the archaeology and history of Ragusa area from the Neolithic Age, gathers relics unearthed from excavations in Modica’s countryside, in Cava d’Ispica and in the Greek site of Camarina.
The Museum of Tindari illustrates the history of this famed site. Outstanding are a sculpted Emperor Augustus’ head, recovered from excavations at the Basilica.
The Whitaker Museum of Mozia, a
small island off Trapani coast, displays the famous
statue of the auriga (charioteer) - magnificent marmoreal element
representing a young man dressed with a long tunic, datable to the first halves
the v sec. B. C. - together with Phoenician funerary
items from the thophet necropolis and
numerous artistic vases, ritual masks, etc..
