Coming from Cusco you arrive at the ridge of the Sacred Valley, from here there is a perfect view of the colonial town of
Pisac. The name of the city probably derives from the name of the Andean partridge; this interpretation is supported by the fact that the city plan is shaped like the bird, in accordance with the tradition to find outline of animals in the shape of the plant of cities. Following the same tradition, to the left, at the feet of the mountain, we can observe the so called ‘breast of the Ñusta’: four rows of terraces that look like the breast of a woman. Moreover,
always according to local legend, in the mountain above there is a figure of stone resembling a beautiful
flower: it is Inkill Chumpi, the daughter of Inca Hualla Puma who was turned to stone to be disobedient.
High above the present day village, lay the impressive Inca ruins, a mixture of cultivated terraces, remained unchanged since Inca times, and constructions that make up one the most beautiful architectonic and historic panorama of the area.
Like other Incan constructions, Pisac was not a fortress but a 'royal hacienda', property of Inca Pachacutec, composed by cultivation terraces, household,
ceremonial structures and an aqueduct that provided the water for the agricultural development.

There are two obvious sections of dwellings. On the mountaintop , there is a group of poorer constructions, called Calla Casa,
with irregular designs and rustically made. It is difficult to get there and it is necessary to pass through some dangerous cliffs.
In front, separated by the Quitamayu stream, there is an Incan cemetery. It is an astonishing place located in a slope of the Linliy Mountain. This cemetery is known as ‘Tankanamarka’ (launching place), and must have contained approximately 10,000 graves. Unfortunately all the tombs have been profaned and there is no scientific trace that could have been recovered. Nowadays, we can see
only the small holes resulted from the profanations.

Walking on an aerial path we can reach the lower section of the ruins. After crossing two tunnels we arrive at a vantage point, with an excellent view of the valley and of the most significant monuments.
Inside a stone enclosure there is a stone-carved Intiwatana. Considered the Sun Temple of Pisac it must have been used to watch the sun movements and as an altar to celebrate religious ceremonies. Like the Intiwatana of Machu Picchu this carved stone served for astronomical observations, being aligned with the sunrise of June solstice. The Intiwatana of Pisac together with the most famous one of Machu Picchu is the only surviving examples. Next to the Intiwatana we find several rooms with finely polished walls and niches with trapezoidal shape.
The fountains and water channels also characterized this zone. It is said that they had strictly religious aims due to the carving quality. The main fountain, located 20 meters away from the central door of the complex, could have been used for ceremonial baths.

Below the main ruins are some of the most impressive pre-Columbian terraces in Peru. There are various sectors with agricultural terraces of different shapes. The terraces, still cultivated nowadays, are masterly laid out, separated by walls and with stone steps for easy access from terrace to terrace. Blended harmoniously with the landscape, the terraces go down almost to the village, a thousand feet below.
The Pisac modern town is like other Andean colonial towns, a massive colonial church and an interesting
traditional market. Under centenary trees the main square welcomes spontaneous fairs carried out every Tuesday and Thursday, when people from local villages gather to sell handicrafts and food. Unfortunately these fairs have long lost their spontaneous character since the tourists, brought by the all-inclusive tours, started to visit them regularly.
