Royal Chitwan National Park
Descending from the Kathmandu valley towards the immense plain of Gange river along the Indian border we reached the Terai Region after about six hours car drive. Not long ago this lowland at the foot of the Himalayas was almost completely covered by tropical and sub-tropical forest, well known for big game hunting grouped in few scattered villages were the Tharu the only people living in the valley apparently immune from the malaria. Today Chitwan valley is one of the few remaining undisturbed natural areas and the Royal Chitwan National Park, Nepal's first and most famous national park, protects this ecosystem and particularly the endangered one-horned rhinoceros, tiger, and gharial crocodile. Royal Chitwan National Park is listed as UNESCO world heritage site.

At a shallow river our car dropped us and we crossed it on a wooden bridge and covered the last 6 km to Sauraha, the park entrance, on a horse cart.
The area includes lakes and flood plains flooded during the tropical monsoon time, when most of the roads are virtually impassable. The vegetation is mainly grassland and river side forest of sal, a typical tree of the region. Birdwatching in the area is quite rewarding being possible to observe over 450 species of birds. It is also possible to visit the elephants breeding centre. Here we organised the elephant ride inside the protected area to spot a rhinoceros with its baby, a boat ride along the river and a guided bush walk in search of footprints of the tiger.

Just outside the park border among rice fields, mud cottages and oxen drawn charts the village of Sauraha offers the opportunity to contact the traditional country life of the Terai people. In one of the two cultural centres of the villages we assisted at the Tharu traditional dances like the stick dance and the peacock dance.
